“Geometra is a brilliant program that saves me a lot of time”

Ole Morten Rømo is a BIM Estimator and dedicated specialist in quantity take-off and cost estimation at Byggmakker Handel Tekniske Tjenester. Every day, he helps customers measure and calculate material quantities for various construction projects. Most of his customers are professionals, such as building contractors and residential developers.

Ole Morten uses Geometra on a daily basis. Most often, he performs quantity take-offs directly on PDF drawings, extracting areas, lines, and occasionally volumes – for example, for earthworks. He also uses Geometra to mark zones, such as logistics areas or different construction phases in larger projects.

‘We help contractors extract a lot of information in Geometra, including material lists. I export the data and import it into SmartKalk, where I calculate the materials and complete the estimate.’

In addition to PDF drawings, Ole Morten also works with IFC models. He calculates all types of materials purchased through the store and ensures that the information is correct.

‘As a supplier of building materials, we often become part of the customer’s workflow. It creates great value for the customer that we can offer quantity take-off and data validation. I often verify the IFC model data with the help of a PDF in Geometra.’

Byggmakker also assists private customers with smaller projects, such as extensions or a new garage. All stores – more than 60 across the country – offer this service.

‘A large part of my job is finding cost-effective solutions that fit within the framework of the building description. If I am involved from the beginning, everything becomes much easier. We are up to date on building regulations and laws, so we usually agree with the customer on a good solution.’

1. What is the most impressive material innovation that you think deserves more attention?

– Cross-laminated timber. It has enormous strength, allows fast construction, and is excellent for storage. It makes the building process very simple and quick.

2. If you could only sell one building product for the rest of your life – what would it be and why?

– That would have to be 2x4 (C24-48x098). It’s a type of structural timber. You can build almost anything with it. It’s very versatile.

3. What is the most creative way you have seen someone use a building product?

– That would be windproof tape. It can be used for almost anything – for example, repairing a car window.
